Houjiatun Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located in the vicinity of Houjiatun Village, Dashatan of Liuhe County, Jilin Province, with its reference section being situated in the area of Dongchangtai on the northern side of the Hongsheng Reservoir, Xinbin County, Liaoning Province. It was named by the No. 105 Geological Party under the Coalfields Administration of Jilin Province as the “Houjiatun Red Siltstone” in 1960.

Lithology and Thickness
Lower part is composed of purple siltstone and black-grey and grey-black siltstone, intercalated with carbonaceous shale and poor-quality coal beds or coal seams. Upper part is alternating layers of grey-white and light-yellow pebble-bearing sandstone, feldspar-sandstone, violet siltstone and thick-bedded conglomerate and sandy conglomerate. Its lower part is with a thickness of about 210 m, and its upper part is with a thickness of about 355 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
It is in an unconformable contact with the underlying Paleozoic Erathem or older granite.
Upper contact
Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Lamenzi Fm
Regional extent
It is distributed extensively in the areas of Dashatan, Houjiatun and Sanyuanpu of Liuhe County, Wangqingmen till West Hills of Dongjiangdao of Tonghua County, Jilin Province, as well as in the area of Dongchangtai of Hongmiaozi Township, Xinbin County, Liaoning Province. It represents products of the early-stage development of the late Mesozoic basins in the above-mentioned areas. Its thickness varies in a range from 300 m to 1000 m.

Fossils
In the area of Liuhe Basin it yields plant fossils as represented by Ciniopteris simplex, Cladophlebis argutula, Pterophyllum sp., Anomozamites sp., Ctenis cf. chinensis, Nilssonia sp., Ginkgo sp., and Pityophyllum longifolium; in the area of the Dongchangtai section it yields plant fossils as represented by Coniopteris bella, C. hymenophylloides, Eboracia lobifolia, Phoenicopsis angustifolis; sporo-pollen fossils as represented by the Classopollis-Quadraeculing assemblage; and Ostracods as represented by Darwinula giganimpudica, D. sarytirmenensis, D, incurva, D. yangshulingensis, D. rongxianensis, and Timiriasevia cf. altovata. In addition, there are also conchostracans, fish and a small amount of mollusk fossils.

The formation belongs to fluvial-lacustrine deposits.
